2014 Gold Sovereigns - St. George & Dragon Design

The 2014 sovereign features the famous St George and the dragon design on the reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci and Ian Rank-Broadley's obverse portrait design. As always we have taken lots of advance orders for both the bullion and proof coins at our usual competitive prices.

Buying from Chard

Not only can we guarantee that our prices for both the proof and bullion coins are cheaper than The Royal Mint's but buying from us you also get the benefit of buying from expert professional numismatists who have been in the business for nearly 50 years. While we appreciate the Royal Mint have existed for longer, we know more about sovereigns and half sovereigns than they do!

2014 Sovereign Packaging

In late 2012 / early 2013 The Royal Mint changed the product description and packaging of the sovereign to appeal to different markets.

Their brilliant uncirculated coin is only available to purchase direct and is supplied in a cardboard presentation box with a small booklet providing the history of the sovereign in relation to World War One. Their bullion coin is, as far as we are aware, produced using the same method but is only supplied in tubes of 25 to investors and subsequently does not come with any accompanying paperwork / literature.

We do not see any real advantage of paying £325 for a brilliant uncirculated sovereign when a bullion can be purchased for so much less (as at November 11th 2013 when a 2014 bullion sovereign was just £210).

If you would like a box for your coin we can supply these at an additional £2 - these can be added at checkout

Issue Limits

The Royal Mint states that the issue limit for the Brilliant Uncirculated Sovereign is 15,000, but we do not know the issue limit for the bullion version yet - it may be just whenever they decide to stop minting them.
The issue limit for the proof sovereign is 7,500.

Uncirculated Sovereign

Update - May 2014: The 2014 Uncirculated Sovereigns are back in stock.

Proof Sovereigns

We have always been able to offer the proof sovereign at significant discount to The Royal Mint (and many of our competitors) as we are happy to pass any trade discount on to our customers. In recent years the trade discount has been reduced and The Royal Mint's selling terms are becoming more and more one-sided. We are fortunately still able to offer the 2014 Proof Sovereign at £25 less than the Royal Mint's selling price of £450 (as of 23rd December 2013).

We received our first delivery of 2014 proof sovereigns on 18th December 2013.

Update - 21st January

Just 5 weeks after we bought our proof sovereigns, The Royal Mint have reduced their price from £450 to £390. We have reduced our price accordingly and at £375 are offering a £15 discount, but we are now making a loss on them. As you can imagine, not only customers who purchased theirs at the higher price, but also dealers like us, are not happy with this news.

If The Royal Mint continue to drop their prices to amounts equal to, or lower than the trade prices, we may need to stop stocking Royal Mint products, as there will be no need to, and customers may as well go directly to the mint. If this happens, The Royal Mint will no longer have any competition and with a complete monopoly over the market, will be able to increase their prices to over-inflated amounts once more, with no option for customers to purchase from elsewhere.
