2009 Gold Sovereigns

The 2009 sovereigns are expected to have the familiar St. George and Dragon design, or will they?

St. George and Dragon - Recut 2009 Reverse Dies
The traditional St George & Dragon design has been used on sovereigns, with a few breaks, since 1817.
During this long period, there have been a considerable number of minor changes to the dies used for the reverse (tail side). In 2007, the reverse design appears to have been completely re-engraved, although there was no advance announcement of this from the Royal Mint.
The 2009 reverse dies have again been re-engraved, using "original Victorian tools". For details use the link from the heading of this paragraph.

Altered Dies
The first thing we noticed about the 2007 sovereigns was that they were a real pig to photograph, and the 2008's were similar.
Our "Mint Spies" tell us that the 2009 sovereign is going to use an older version of the reverse die, which should give a sharper, more detailed impression of the design. Great!
We try wherever possible to use our own photographs, although sometimes we use images supplied by the various mints, at least on a pre-issue basis, replacing them with our own images as soon as possible after we receive our first deliveries.
Despite our considerable experience in photographing coins, the results can be quite variable. Some coins photograph beautifully, others are really difficult, and require time, patience, and experimentation before we can be happy with the results.

Issue Limits
For 2008, the issue limit was 75,000 for the uncirculated; for 2009 it may be increased. The issue limit for the proof version will be 12,500, subject to confirmation.

Sell-Out Prediction
We can confidently predict a complete sell-out of the 2009 bullion sovereigns about June 2009, although the Royal Mint's retail sales department "The Royal Mint Coin Club", will probably retain a quantity to support its direct sales operation. It is therefore quite likely that these will start to sell at an extra premium price. After our initial 5,000 pieces, we placed a second 5,000 piece order, and also upped our provisional order to 1,000 pieces per week. This would have meant that we alone would have taken about 50,000 of the 75,000 maximum mintage for the year. As it now stands, we are extremely unlikely to receive more than about 25,000 pieces, unless any other distributor fails to take up their allocation.

Currently out of stock - next delivery December 2009

We are happy to take advance orders for our next batch of newly minted 2009 gold sovereigns. We are due to have these in stock during December. As soon as we receive them in stock we usually aim to post them out the same day where possible.
