1949 Swiss 20 Francs
1949 Gold Sovereigns Were Not Issued.
What's the Alternative?
If you are a gold sovereign collector, there is no alternative, however if like many of our customers you are looking for an unusual gift, we do have a few suggestions:-
1949 Swiss 20 Francs
Switzerland were one of the few countries to issue any gold coins in 1949.
Britain, for example, did not issue any gold sovereigns between 1932 until 1957, except for those included in the proof sets of 1937. Most countries were still struggling to recover from the economic effects of World War II, and were desperately trying to retain or rebuild their gold reserves.
For coin collectors, this does not matter, as collectors very sensibly restrict themselves to collecting dates which exist. If, however, you are looking for an unusual gift to mark a 50th birthday, or a golden wedding, the lack of a suitable gold coin may cause a problem. As leading UK coin dealers, we get asked almost daily for a 1949 sovereign. As we hate to disappoint our customers, we have managed to unearth a small quantity of these attractive gold Swiss 20 Franc coins in Uncirculated condition.

Other Suggestions
We may be able to find an 1849 sovereign for you. It's quite an early Victorian, so we can't be sure of always having one in stock, but we can try.
We have 1949 coin sets in stock. Prices vary according to condition, starting from £20 in selected (better than average) condition.
We could try to locate a different gold coin for you, but we tend not to keep them in stock. Krugerrands did not appear until 1967.
