Small Head
1930 sovereigns have the new smaller head portrait of King George V, which was used from 1929 to 1932 inclusive, making these quite desirable from a type collectors point of view.

Mints
Only the Melbourne and Perth Mints in Australia and the Pretoria Mint in South Africa issued sovereigns in 1930, The mintmark is visible on the ground above the centre of the date.

Weak Striking
Weak striking can, and does occur on may different dates and mintmarks of sovereigns. Some mints are known to have been forced to continue using old worn dies while waiting for replacements from the Royal Mint, it would also have been likely that less striking pressure was used to try to conserve the existing dies until replacements arrived.. The branch mints tend to be more badly affected.
In 1930 it would appear that the Perth Mint must have been using very worn dies, and perhaps striking using old dies, as all the 1930 Perth Mint sovereigns we can remember seeing have been weakly struck, as you can see from our photographs.
